Elite gates use thicker-gauge steel than most residential brands (typically 12- to 14-gauge on the frame rails, depending on the model line), which means failures usually show up at stress points rather than across the whole panel. Hinge welds crack first. The lower corner opposite the hinge collects water and rusts from the inside. We see it on Elites in North Hollywood all the time, especially on driveways where sprinklers hit the gate frame every morning.

Which Elite Models This Applies To

Elite has produced several residential and light-commercial gate lines over the years, and the welding needs differ between them. The heavier Elite SL3000 and Estate series swing gates use welded steel box frames with aluminum or steel infill panels. The Elite Premier line tends toward steel tube frames with welded pickets. Each takes a different repair approach: a cracked weld on a box frame needs grinding back to clean steel and re-welding with the right heat setting, while a picket repair often means cutting out the broken section and fabricating a matched replacement.

Identifying your Elite model before calling saves time. The model plate is usually riveted to the inside of the gate frame near the hinge side, about knee height. If the plate is gone, measure the frame tube dimensions: Elite box frames are typically 2×2 inch or 2×3 inch steel tube, and the gate’s overall height and width will narrow down which series it is. For the welding itself, we use OEM-spec steel matched to the existing metal thickness. Aftermarket steel is often lighter gauge than what Elite originally used, and welding thin replacement stock onto a thick frame creates a joint that fails again in a year. We don’t do that.

Signs Your Elite Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate drags on the driveway but the hinges look fine. The frame has twisted, usually because a weld at the hinge block cracked and the gate’s weight is now pulling the corner down. The hinge bolts stay tight; the geometry doesn’t. We can re-square and weld the frame back true.
• You can hear a creak or pop when the gate opens, right at the hinge point. That’s a cracked weld flexing. The sound is the two steel surfaces rubbing against each other. Every cycle widens the crack by a few thousandths of an inch.
• Rust-colored water streaks run down from the bottom rail or hinge pockets. Water got inside the tube steel, usually through a pinhole in a factory weld. By the time you see staining on the outside, the interior wall is already thinning.
• The gate lists to one side when it’s fully open. The frame has hogged, meaning one corner dropped permanently. On Elite gates, this usually traces back to a broken diagonal brace weld that was never caught.
• Pickets are wobbling inside the top rail. The horizontal rail is rusting from the inside, and the picket ends have nothing solid left to weld to. This is common on older Elite Premier gates in North Hollywood, especially near irrigation overspray.

DIY or Call Us?

If you’re comfortable checking your gate, there are two things worth doing before you pick up the phone. First, photograph the crack or rust spot from three angles so you can see whether it changes week to week. Second, check whether the gate still opens and closes without the motor working against the frame, since that tells you whether the problem is structural or the operator is masking it.

What we don’t recommend is attempting the weld yourself unless you have real experience with structural steel. Gate frames carry hundreds of pounds, and a cold or contaminated weld on a hinge point can fail suddenly, dropping the gate onto a car, a kid, or you.
