FAAC Gate Motor Replacement: The North Hollywood Owner’s Guide

FAAC gate motor replacement in North Hollywood typically runs $850-$1,900 installed, depending on which FAAC series you have and whether the capacitor or control board is failing along with the motor itself. We carry FAAC-compatible replacement motors on our service trucks, and most swaps are completed in a single visit. The usual discovery path looks like this: the gate starts moving slower than it did last month, then one morning it hums without opening, or it opens halfway and reverses for no reason you can find.

By the time most owners in North Hollywood call us, they’ve already reset the breaker twice and greased the track. The motor isn’t a wear item you notice gradually. It fails in a specific way, and knowing which FAAC model you have tells us almost everything about what to expect.

Which FAAC Models This Applies To

We install replacement motors for the FAAC 400, 402, 412, 415, 760, 770, 844, and C720/C721 series, plus the newer FAAC S418 and S700 lines. The easiest way to identify your model is the silver data plate on the motor housing itself, usually on the underside or the rear face near the release mechanism. It lists the model number, voltage (115V or 24V), and sometimes the production year.

Here’s the FAAC-specific gotcha most people don’t know: a 115V FAAC 402 motor is not interchangeable with a 24V FAAC 402 motor even though the housing looks identical. The capacitor wiring differs, and installing the wrong voltage motor will burn the new part out within weeks. We check the plate before we order anything. If the plate is corroded or painted over, we read the capacitor rating and match the winding spec instead.

We recommend genuine FAAC or OEM-equivalent motors for the 400 and 402 series because the gearbox interface is proprietary and aftermarket copies tend to run hot in sustained California sun exposure. For the S418 and S700 lines, quality aftermarket motors from Italian suppliers are often just as reliable and cost about 15-20% less. We’ll quote both if both exist for your model.

Vance Gate Repair North Hollywood is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with FAAC S.p.A. We stock FAAC-compatible parts and motors, plus parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls systems.

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing

Signs Your FAAC Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
  • Gate hums but doesn’t move. This is almost always the start capacitor failing or a stripped gear in the motor’s reduction drive. The motor is getting power, but it can’t produce the starting torque to move the gate leaf.
  • Gate moves in one direction only. One winding in the motor has shorted or the reversing relay on the control board is stuck. If you hear the motor run in open but not close, the motor itself may still be fine, and the issue is upstream.
  • Gate opens, then immediately reverses on its own. The obstruction sensing is triggering falsely, often from a failing motor drawing excessive current on startup. The board reads that current spike as an obstruction and reverses the gate.
  • Motor housing is hot to the touch after a cycle or two. FAAC motors have a thermal overload that cuts power when the windings overheat. A motor consistently running hot means the internal insulation is breaking down, and replacement is close.
  • Intermittent operation after rain. Moisture has found a seam in the motor housing or the grommets where wires enter. In North Hollywood, this is less about rain frequency and more about irrigation overspray hitting the operator. We see it all the time near North Hollywood Park, where sprinklers arc wide onto gate posts.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard FAAC 400/402 single-swing gate motor replacement in North Hollywood, you’re looking at $850-$1,250 installed. That includes the new motor, the capacitor (we replace the capacitor with every motor swap, no exceptions), the labor, and a full limit-switch recalibration. For the larger FAAC 770 or S700 series on a heavy ornamental gate, plan on $1,400-$1,900. Heavy gates put more load on the motor at every cycle, and we won’t put a 400-series motor on a gate that exceeds its duty rating.

The price is written before we start. You get one number, itemized, and that’s the number you pay. It includes hauling the old motor away and photographing the new installation. Under Clause 1 of The Haven Standard, you get a written scope and written price on every single job, including this one. No verbal estimate, no surprise invoice at the end.

Service North Hollywood Price Range
FAAC 400/402 motor replacement (single gate) $850-$1,250 installed
FAAC 415/412 motor replacement (single gate) $950-$1,400 installed
FAAC 760/770 or S700 motor replacement (heavy gate) $1,400-$1,900 installed
Capacitor replacement only (some models) $120-$220 installed

A failed capacitor can mimic a failed motor, and that’s the $120 fix nobody wants you to know about. We test the capacitor with the motor disconnected before recommending replacement. If the motor genuinely has a burned winding, we show you the meter reading on the spot.

All motor replacements under our 365-Day Done Right Promise carry a full one-year workmanship warranty. The motor itself carries the manufacturer’s warranty, typically 2-3 years. If it fails within our window, we make it right at no additional charge.

DIY or Call Us?

Diagnosing a FAAC motor is safe to do from the outside: check the breaker, look for a tripped GFCI, and note whether the gate hums when you press the button. That’s all useful information for us, and we’ll take it over the phone. What’s not safe is opening the motor housing. The capacitor stores enough charge to knock you off a ladder even with the breaker off, and the gate leaf itself weighs anywhere from 300 to 800 pounds. If a spring or hinge lets go while you’re inside the operator, that’s a serious injury.

If you want to replace a FAAC motor yourself, we won’t stop you, and we’re glad to sell advice over the phone. But most North Hollywood owners call after discovering the hard part isn’t unbolting the motor. It’s setting the limit switches so the gate closes fully without stalling, and getting the torque setting right so the obstruction sensing actually works. Get that wrong, and the gate will eat a car bumper by the end of the week.

If you’d rather not, call (213) 566-1045. We arrive with the motor and capacitor already on the truck, and the price is written before we touch the gate. Name what you found. Name what it costs. Leave the gate straight.
